Free Calm Corner Planner
A calm corner is an optional place for a supported pause, not punishment or isolation. Plan a setup for ages 7–12 using materials you already have, with an adult available and a manageable next step.
Start small
A portable basket can work when there is no spare corner. Begin with a familiar item, an accessible place to sit and a clear way to ask for support. Practice when the child is settled; do not introduce the routine as a consequence during conflict.
Example: a classroom basket
Keep paper, a familiar book and a simple request card near an available adult. Agree on a discreet signal, offer support without forcing use and return with one manageable task step. The planner above adds age adaptations, prompts and safety boundaries.
Sources and scope
The planning principles draw on NCPMI’s non-punitive calm-down area guidance. That resource focuses on younger children; SafeSEL’s adaptations for ages 7–12 are editorial suggestions, not a validated treatment protocol.
